Did you know you can burn a bootable mksysb image from your CDRW/DVDRW capable PC or laptop when the server/LPAR doesn't have one available? Here's how:
  1. Log in to the server as the root user.
  2. Run the smitty mkcd command.
  3. Select No from the Use an existing mksysb image menu. Selecting No allows you to create a new system backup that reflects your current running environment.
  4. Select the options that are appropriate to your environment from the Back Up This System to CD menu. You can also leave the default options as they are.
  5. Select Yes for the Do you want the CD to be bootable option.
  6. Select No for the Remove final images after creating CD option.
  7. Select No for the Create the CD now option.
  8. Press Enter to begin the system backup creation when you finish making selections. When the operation completes successfully, there is a file or files located in the /mkcd/cd_images directory.
  9. FTP (binary mode) the ISO backup image to your PC or laptop.
  10. Create a bootable CD from the ISO backup image using your CD-burning software
Now you have a bootable CD or DVD created from your PC. its just that easy.

One thing to note, you may need to change the file extension to be .iso prior to burning the image on to CD.

Very true. Some PC software require the .ISO extension.

Can this mksysb be used to restore on different hardware? If so, will one be required to have the regular AIX installation CDs?

Yes. Well, it depends. On an mksysb CD you have what your original system had. If the original system has all the drivers and kernels that are required on the new hardware and the new hardware is supported, then all you need is the mksysb CD set you have just created.

Re: How to write a bootable mksysb CD/DVD on your PC

Hi,
I just tried this. I end up with these 3 files:

673312768 Nov 15 11:44 cd_image_299176.vol1
676249600 Nov 15 11:50 cd_image_299176.vol2
289474560 Nov 15 11:52 cd_image_299176.vol3

being new to mksysb, which of these would i need to burn to cd or dvd?
would all of them need to be renamed to .iso?

Thanks in advance.
J

Hi J,

All three need to be burned on CD for a successfull restore. Whether you have to rename them to .iso depends on your CD burner software. Some of them, like Nero, require the ISO images to have the .iso extension, others may not.

Just an additional note to the above procedure.
IF /mkcd/cd_images is already there and mounted this procedure will not work. do the following:
1. umount /mkcd/cd_images
2. remove the lv associated to the mount
3. rm -r /mkcd/cd_images
4. Now restart the smitty mkcd

Re: How to write a bootable mksysb CD/DVD on your PC

First of all thanks for all the guys to share their valualbe information and knowledge in this thread. i had some some doughts about making bootable system image, but now it got clarified through this thread.

Hi sbzx,
just for my understanding and clarification.
We need to rename the three boot images as
cd_image_299176.vol1 to cd_image_299176.vol1.iso
cd_image_299176.vol2 to cd_image_299176.vol2.iso
cd_image_299176.vol3 to cd_image_299176.vol3.iso
am i right or wrong? and then right the cd/dvd ?

Also if i am not deviating the topic/thread further, then can anyone clarify the steps required to make a bootable image of system for system restore or installation in tape ( instead of cd/dvd )? if possible through both command line and smitty...
