IBM recently announced the JS21 blade, which is powered by IBM's dual-core PowerPC 970MP chip with integrated Advanced Power Virtualization technology.

The target market for the JS21 blade are companies engaged in grid computing, retail, manufacturing or fossil fuels research.

The new JS21 blade can support from one to ten partitions running AIX, Linux or a combination in the case of multiple partitions. While designed for the JS21 Bladecenter, the JS21 blade is also compatible with existing BladeCenter systems. Conversely, existing blades will run in the JS21 Bladecenter.

The new generation of IBM blades sets new standards for heat control and power consumption, growing concerns as datacenters grow more dense.

When you consider that the JS21 blade comes in with a price tag of just $2.5K, a chassis that routes data at speeds of more than 40 Gb (10 times faster than previous systems) and the first blade server in the industry to provide built-in virtualization, the JS21 is a knock-out entry for IBM UNIX into the blade market.

Re: IBM JS21 Blade Server

Other than adding the APV to the JS21, didn't IBM also add their Quad-Core Technology?

Re: IBM JS21 Blade Server

You mean the Quad Core Module which is really dual-core technology, right?

Yes, you are correct.

Yeh, but you have to go with the marketing titles when you work for a business partner -- after all, IBM pays the bills

Re: IBM JS21 Blade Server

We configured JS21 blades for one banking customer for their SAP development and quelity assurance enviroment using the APV and IVM features to create 3 partitions (one the VIOS and other two as VIO Clients). LPARs are abooting from SAN based disks virtualized throught the VIOS Server. We have even use the virtual ethernet adapters in order to create the NFS mount points to configure the transport system.

Up to date, everything is running at very good performance.

Re: IBM JS21 Blade Server

Did anyone that has worked with the JS21 balde have an issue booting from SAN? I can see my LUN fine to load OS, AIX5.3, but when the balde reboots at end of OIS load it never sees the LUN again, so it never boots up...
