Installing IVM/VIOS Cant connect via Serial!

Hi , as the title suggests. Im not utilising an HMC and have installed VIOS 1.5.2 onto a P505. On booting the OS I can see the SMS menu, it passes this reaches the NFS mounting completed bit and then dies. At one point I managed to see via the ASMI that it was on 0c33(attempting to configure TTY). Not sure why as I was already connected and viewing the output fine.
Also I cant access the ASMI sometimes when I connect via serial...its really unpredictable, sometimes I can only access serial and not ASMI and visa versa....Im loosing the will to live....any help is very much appreciated
