IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

Hello All, I notice on the back of my 275 there are two ports labeled HMC they are serial style ports. How can I make use of them to create LPARS on my 275? Or is this not possible at all? I am not after a "supported" configuration. So if someone knows how to make LPArs work I'd be real happy. I know on HP-UX you can make some of the machines do things there not meant to works fine just not supported. This system is for me to lean on so LPARs are a part of my learning. If the 275 can not have LPARS. What do the HMC ports do? if anything? Thanks

Yeah, the 9114 can do LPAR, you'll need an HMC and off you go.

Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

Thats really good to here! How do I connect to the HMC port? So far all the documentation I've read uses RJ-45 and not serial. Is this just a normal non-cross or null modem cable from HMC port to serial port on HMC machine? If I use the vmware HMC guide (sorry can't post links)

I should be able to then connect my Vmware image to my HMC port?

Thanks

Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

From what I've read I need a Version 3 Recovery image for HMC. Any version above 3 has no support for power4.

I notice that IBM require you to order this, has anyone done this?
Do I need to have a support contract or can anyone just order the recovery media.

Anyone know where to download a copy? I've found v4 and up on an IBM FTP server.

Thanks all,

Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

Placed an order for HMC Recovery CD V3 R3.5. Hopfully that should work with my 275. I can't find any indication that it will or won't work. Its a power4 so i am guessing it should be fine.

Really need some help working out what type of serial connection I need to make. Also what HMC port 1 or 2?

Thanks

Thumbs down Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

Got the HMC up and running.
Got the system connected to the HMC.
The HMC can see the system.

All is well in HMC world

BUT! Under system properties.
Capability | LPAR = No
At the bottom of the screen its saying maximum Number of Partitions 2.

I am getting the feeling that the box can't support LPARS!

Any help?

Thanks

Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

Hi, sorry, its sister the 7029 can do LPAR but the 9114 intellistation cannot.

In the User's Guide, Chapter 5, page 61:

http://publib16.boulder.ibm.com/pser...pdf/380635.pdf

Note:
On some of the system management services (or service processor) screens, you will see the term LPAR, which is equivalent to the term logical partition. This system does not support logical partitions.

It looks like the firmware (same for both systems) recognises the model and does not allow LPARs on the 9114.

Re: IBM IntelliStation 9114-275 LPAR possible?

The 7029 is a very nice looking rack system. Pity its hard to find IBM power machines in Australia.

I wonder if its possible to remove the f/W check. Very unlikely…

Such a pity I've been looking forward to learning about LPARS!

Thanks for your help.
