I'm a Linux SysAdmin who doesn't want to type 100 characters in this box just to register. How completely ridiculous of a requirement is this?

Unfortunately it is necessary. We're trying to run a site with good technical content. The kind you can feel free to access from work if you're in a bind.

If you don't put strong anti-SPAM measures in place, we'll have a sie riddled with adverts for cell phones, viagra, Russian mail order brides, or a someone wanting to show us what his girlfriend does with farm animals.

We don't need crud like that here. So it means, for the good of the community, you have to type something about yourself. Thats a small price to pay, don't you think?
