Re: boot from a storage area network (SAN)

Hi

Not on a p520 but on a JS21. I used SUSE 9 for PowerPC and didn't recognized the SAN disks so i updated the microcode level for the emulex FC and then downloaded the latest available SUSE Linux SP. I started Linux install using that SP cd and configured the SAN disks. I was able to partition and install.

Hope this helps

Re: boot from a storage area network (SAN)

our probelm on p520 is here:
set up boot target entries in HBA boot bios to the pathes from SVC
in order to put the HBA in a bootable state and tell the HBA BIOS from which LUN
and SCSI ID we want to boot from.

These are the steps we performed:
SAN boot setup - RHEL5 GA Version - Linux on Power - Emulex 10000 and 11000 HBAs

1. set up zoning of SAN at switches

2. prepare SVC
2.1 add host entries
2.2 add vdisk (5GB) to install on
2.3 add hostvdiskmap (only one)

3. check if system bios needs to be adjusted - e.g. switch from a "PLAIN-SCSI"
boot entry to a "PCI-Slot 1" ,since HBA is in first PCI-Slot

4. prepare/check HBA
4.1 install HBA bootcode.
Boot Code works with the existing BIOS on supported systems and allows the
system to boot from a connected Fibre Channel drive.
Universal Boot version 5.02a4 installed (LP11000)
Universal Boot version 5.02a4 installed (LP10000)

4.2 activate boot bios of HBA
Set up in system bios to boot from your Host Bus Adapter (If the bios doesn't
check for bootable LUNs on the HBA anyway ??)

4.3 set up boot target entries in HBA boot bios to the pathes from SVC
in order to put the HBA in a bootable state and tell the HBA BIOS from which LUN
and SCSI ID we want to boot from.

( Currently problems to perform this task !!! )
