VIO Versus Multiple Virtual Ethernet under SEA

I have created a single shared ethernet adapter on my VIO server. I have several client partitions that need to talk to the outside world on different VLAN's. I have read that for each VLAN that the client partitions talk to through the SEA I would need another virtual ethernet adapter under the SEA, however it looks to me like setting the IEE 802.1Q adapter options with multiple Virtual LAN ID's on one virtual adapter under the SEA would achieve the same thing (up to the adapter limit of 20 anyway).

Is my thinking correct or am I talking out of somewhere I shouldn't? Are there any pros or cons to either approach?

Thanks,

Sam

Re: VIO Versus Multiple Virtual Ethernet under SEA

You can either set up Multiple SEA's or go down the route of doing VLAN tagging. To achieve VLAN tagging, the switch your connected to must be enabled for VLAN tagging or it will not work.

I say it depends on resources you have installed, do you have enough physical adapters to go along the multiple SEA's route? If so, then go down that route, as your greatly reducing the risk of the one SEA failing and losing all VLAN's.

I know chances of the above happening are remote, what with the use of Etherchannel etc, but it provides another level of redundency.
