hi! i`m installing VIOS on a 9110-51A (p5 510) i followed these steps publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/topic/iphb1/iphb1_vios_install_lpm.htm[/url] i`ve used RS232 null modem cable connected to the first serial port on p5 and to a linux server with minicom. (we dont have HMC for now) the steps from 1 to 4 are ok. serial console works fine. but after the p5 rebooted: ... ... wrote a response and then reread the message. Anyways, if you dont have a HMC it goes into a IVM-mode. I think you should read more about that. A way to get into the computer is to boot up in single-user.

Hi all I came across the postings. I am actually very interested in how you resolved this issue, as I am facing the same. I installed VIO 1.3.0 on my new 9110-51A. VIO starts up but does not complete its boot. It is hung at the exact same stage as indicated by the creator of the thread. The startup hangs after outputing Completed NFS services. I tried to start in single user mode to debug this. I am facing another challenge there, as I do not seem to have the right login. I tried padmin (the supposedly default VIO password) and the admin password of ASM. I got no luck in either case. Thanks in advance for any help there. Regards Alex Aisinzon |

I have this same problem. I have new 505 system without a HMC. My console gets to starting the NFS processes and stops. One would think that it is booted up but the console is mis-directed. Is there some way to get a console login without a HMC? Help! TIA

If you don't have an HMC you need to buy IVM, VIOS only works with an HMC. Contact the people you bought it from and explain you don't have an HMC so you need IVM not VIOS. |

Hi there, First, I would like to thank you all, for all the work made on that forum. As a newbie in AIX / VIOS world, it helps me a lot understanding some tricky things. But here, in spite of all the redbooks documentation and web searching, I'm really stuck in same problem as yk. I have a Eserver P5 9110-510, firmware updated from SF225 to SF235, factory reset, VET key applied in the CoD ASMI interface. I have only one P5 server, and I just wants to enable virtualization for test purpose. We don't have HMC but IVM is enough for us and match perfectly our needs. So I followed all the instructions in the "Integrated Virtualization Manager on IBM System p5" Redbook, boot on SMS menu, boot on VIOS 1.3 DVD, installation and reboot, all fine without a single error. But just like yk case, in the VIOS boot sequence, I lost the prompt just after the "Completed NFS services" line. I've gathered informations on the Internet, and most of guys talks about a wiring / cable problem. Apparently, the serial cable has to be a RS232 null-modem handshaking. I've managed to open my cable, and the cable I use is a RS232 handshaking cable. I've also changed port configuration, flow control, and terminal software (Putty, AlphaCom, Hyperterminal), no prompt after the VIOS boot sequence. I've tried to read as much documentations as I can, but there's nothing about this issue. What did I do wrong ? Thanks for your help. |

Ok, I have an answer from IBM. This is definitly a cable / wiring problem : IBM gave me that diagram, of what they call "null-modem" cable. Code: DB9 Numéro 1 DB9 Numéro 2 Nom N Nom N RD 2 TD 3 TD 3 RD 2 DTR 4 DSR+CD 6+1 SG 5 SG 5 DSR+CD 6+1 DTR 4 RS 7 CS 8 CS 8 RS 7 I already had a null-modem cable, but to be sure, I opened a web site that explained the RS232 standard The wiring schema of my cable was a RS232 null-modem cable with full handshaking. The schema gave by IBM is nearly the same, EXCEPT for one point. In the RS232 standard, the pin 1 is not linked to anything, but in the IBM schema, it is linked to the pin 6. At that point of my research, I had no more "good idea", so I opened my null-modem cable, and manage to manually link pin 1 to 6, with a small wire. And at last, the prompt suddendly appear on my terminal emulator. So if you encounter that type of error, remenber that for VIOS prompt, you need a cable different of a standard "null-modem with full handshaking". Regards, PS : I'm not allowed to post web address, as I don't have write at least 5 posts. But you can easily find the RS232 standard with a quick web search. |

Hello sterfield (and hello everybody), and sorry by advance, for my english (I'm a poor lesson frenchy in the IT world). So, I for the moment, quiet exactly in the same position that you, except that I don't get the prompt (however i can get the "OK Prompt" from the SMS menu). But, I done your manipulation concerning the RS 232 (db9 connector, linking the 1 and 6 pin together). So I'm wondering several things... First, do you obtain a prompt after the message "completed NFS services" or is it a "OK prompt" And secondly, what kind of console are you using for that? (emulator, real, graphique, ascii,...). Personnaly, I'm using windows Hyperterminal, or gtkterm from linux, and I'm downloading "Reflection for IBM 2007" in order to see wheter it change something or not. I'm trying to install Aix 4.3.3 on RS/6000 44P Model 170 machine, and I'm always with the final "Completed NFS services" and nothing any more... I've got an GXT6000 video card but it doesn't seems working. Well I'd like to finaly install that OS (maybe AIX 5.2 or later would be easier?). If anyone know how going further...

Hey! I had the same problem. sshd deamon not started. ping worked propertly. I've done "rlogin machine_name" from another virtual partition and started sshd deamon. And everything works fine. |
