| Hi all, We created a vio mksysb image per the NIM A-Z manual. backupios -file /home/padmin/viobackup/VIO.mksysb -mksysb The /home/padmin/viobackup directory was NFS mounted to our nim server. We created a mksysb resource from the mksysb image and then created a SPOT from the mksysb resource. All per the NIM A-Z manual. The problem occurs when we attempt to restore the mksysb through a NIM pull mode. The VIO server connects, packets are transfered, AIX kernel is loaded then it stops at 0608. Were did we go wrong?? Thanks for any and all information djn |

0608 is relating to NFS and/or routing problems I think. I've seen the error before and can't think how we got around it ... I'll see if I can dig up any notes. Ben

Running into a similar problem, but instead of getting the 0608 message i'm seeing a 0609 message. backupios is not available on an hmc or at least not mine so i'm curious if you ment you used installios from the hmc to restore your vio server?

| Yes , I was able to restore my VIO server .Basically, I had to clear out-reset /etc/nimol.conf on HMC ,followed by using correct network interface out of 16 . Also if I recall ,I cleared out some Nim realted files, hmc config files which you will need a root authority on HMC to do so . IBM support gives you temp. root password ,So I would suggest that you open a PMR and work with them . make sure your HMC is upto date in terms of fixes . Below is some more info . Problem:.... Instructions: restore VIO server backup via HMC (1.3 FP8) via HMC (code 6.1). NOTE: HMC fix MH000912 must be put on the system for this to work. Documented procedure to: "instructions how to restore a VIO servers backup with HMC". follows: ================================== VIO Information - A place to start ================================== The only link you really need - First place to start: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/topic/iphb1/iphb1kickoff.htm ================================================== ================= Supplemental information follows. Always defer to information above. ================================================== ================= Links Main link http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/vios/home.html Commands reference http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...ic/iphcg/iphcg Advanced Power Virtualization (VIO) Redbook http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247940.html?Open IVM - Integrated Virtualization Manager redbook (VIO with no HMC) http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/redp4061.html?Open Environment =========== When logging on to a VIO Server. You must login as 'padmin'. You will not be able to login as root. You have only a limited number of commands, not the full complement of commands available in AIX. Take a look at the commands reference above for the list of available commands. Your home directory when you login is /home/padmin and you will not be able to change out of that dir. You can create subdirectories under /home/padmin and that is where your various log files etc are kept. If you want to nfs mount a directory from another server, create a sub directory, and do the nfs mount from there. Installing the Virtual I/O Server from the HMC: =============================================== Find instructions for installing the Virtual I/O Server from the HMC by using the installios command. In the procedure, you will install the Virtual I/O Server from the HMC by using the installios command. Prerequisites ============= This procedure assumes that there is an HMC attached to the managed system, that the Virtual I/O Server logical partition and partition profile have been created, and that the partition has at least one Ethernet adapter and a 16 GB disk assigned to it. If you need to create the logical partition and partition profile, see Creating the Virtual I/O Server logical partition and partition profile. By default, the installios command installs the Virtual I/O Server through the public network interface. To install the Virtual I/O Server through a private network interface, the INSTALLIOS_PRIVATE_IF environment variable must be used. An example is given in the instructions that follow. To complete this procedure, you need to have hmcsuperadmin authority. Before beginning this procedure, have the following information ready: -Static IP address for the Virtual I/O Server -Subnet mask for the Virtual I/O Server -Default gateway for the Virtual I/O Server To install the Virtual I/O Server, follow these steps: 1.Insert the Virtual I/O Server CD or DVD into the HMC. 2.If you are installing the Virtual I/O Server through the public network interface, continue to step 3. If you are installing the Virtual I/O Server through a private network interface, type the following from the HMC command line: export INSTALLIOS_PRIVATE_IF=interface where interface is the network interface through which the installation should take place. 3.From the HMC command line, type: installios 4.Follow the installation instructions according to the system prompts. 5.Check for updates to the Virtual I/O Server. See Updating the Virtual I/O Server. The Virtual I/O Server logical partition is now ready to be configured and managed. The following tasks can now be performed: -After the installation is complete, the only active user ID is the prime administrator (padmin). Create user IDs using the mkuser command. For information about user types, see User types. -Configure the TCP/IP connection for the Virtual I/O Server. To configure the network settings, use the mktcpip command. Important: This task must be completed before you can perform any dynamic LPAR operations. Configure Virtual SCSI and shared Ethernet resources. For instructions, see Managing the Virtual I/O Server === Regards, Shekhar Dhotre. Unix/Storage systems Engineer. Cobb Energy , Atlanta. GA-30075 |
