Any idea why this happens? (CD 1 of 4 in HMC's drive) hscroot@mrhhmc-r39:~> lshmc -v "vpd=*FC ???????? *VC 20.0 *N2 Tue Jul 10 18:58:18 EDT 2007 *FC ???????? *DS Hardware Management Console *TM eserver xSeries 336 -[7310CR3]- *SE 10A018A *MN IBM *PN Unknown *SZ 1058742272 *OS Embedded Operating Systems *NA 10.1.7.151 *FC ???????? *DS Platform Firmware *RM V7R3.1.0.0 " hscroot@mrhhmc-r39:~> OS_install -o define_resource -a type=VIOS -a version=1.4.0.0 -a location=/export/resources/vios -a source=/dev/cdrom vios1_install_res Tue Jul 10 18:58:23 2007 ERROR: VIOS is not a valid type attribute |

| I've had the same exact issue. I used Type = AIX instead of VIOS. That got it to load but not sure tht's the right answer as I have been unable to successfully deploy a vio_server to my managed servers. Have you found a resolution to your issue? Just curios... |

I've recently upgraded the HMC to version 7.3.1.0. I have media for VIO Server version 1.4.1.0 loaded in the HMC's DVD drive and managed to successfully execute the following in an ssh session as hscroot on the HMC: OS_install -o define_resource -a type=AIX -a version=1.4.1.0 -a location=/export/resources/vios -a source=/dev/cdrom vios1_install_res This has resulted in a "vios1_install_res" option when I am attempting to deploy a version 1.2 sysplan as part of the vios deployment step. In short, it looks like it has worked, but I can't confirm yet as I'm still doing the target disk stuff. This has certainly become a lot more difficult since my first vio server deployment in Febuary. However the difficulty is in the lack of instructions and ability to sort them from "old" and "new" style deployment help. I'll keep you posted how I go |

I have fought with this for a few days now - it looks like the OS_install works correctly (after working through incorrect documentation). The Resource shows up correctly but my issue is that the VIOS still is not installed during deployment. From what I can see the resource isn't even being exported (/etc/exports). This makes me think that something else is needed for the export and bootp configuration. It may be this is supposed to happen during the deployment or that another command must be issued. Generally, the process sucks - poor documentation and a lot of guess work! I too will keep you guys posted... |

I'm referring to redbook sg247487 myself and stepping through it. I've been unable to deploy without it failing so far unfortunately. One big stumbling block I've found is that I'm trying to use SAN target disks. A tiny paragraph in the redbook explains the doom I have invited as a result (pg 121): Quote:
I get the distinct impression that SPT is now trying to do way too much. |

| I've rebuilt a new sysplan with much simpler networking and only deploy one of the vios (scsi based), it still fails with the error: "Unable to obtain MAC Address. MAC Address is needed for Operating Environment Install for the port T9-P1-T9" The port name is a tad fishy, so I've sent email to IBM to see if they come back with something helpful. The redbook mentions similar naming problems but indicates they are cosmetic, I'm now wondering if that's still the case. HMC Version: 7.3.1.0 SP0 Build 20070518.1 SPT Version: 2.07.229 VIO Server version: 1.4.1.0 |

Hello! Because I'm hardly limited by time - servers must be deployed to customer asap, I'm downgrade HMC to V6 , reinstall SPT 1, make sysplan and deploy it on my 560Q... Now VIOS installation from DVD in progress. IMHO, we have some mistakes in current release of HMC v7. I'll will get experience with new version on my pilot system, but for production I'm still with V6. Anyway , does have somebody succsessful story of HMC V7 deployment ? |

The SPT team rather understandably, but unhelpfully replied that it's the HMC teams problem and to report the problem to them using "normal channels". Sure was nice of them to forward it on for me...not ![]() I'm trying a standard ibmlink call and will keep you posted how I go. |

I must have tried several dozen times to deploy the SP. I could not downgrade to SPT1 and HMC6 because I was working on a Power6. Due to the DVD attachment to the SAS bus you cannot simply move the DVD from one LPAR to another. I had to deploy a few system plans to move the drive to each of the VIOS to manually install. I haven't communicated with IBM yet... Not too impressed - far to automated with no option to opt out... |
