Hi guys, I've got a prob. We had a 4-way CPU pServer. We use an HMC for managing all the server and use VIO for managing partitions. I previously created 3 logic partitions, and allocate all the resources, including all the harddisk spaces. Now for business needs, we need to create a new partition. Then I reconfigure the resources like CPU, memory, shared Ethernet, etc. However, when I followed the IBM redbook to define logical volumn for the newly created partition, VIO failed the command, and indicated 'not enough space.' Here is the process: 1. Command: mklv -lv rootvg_par4 vg_2 10G rootvg_client is a volumn group I created before when I setup the 3 partions months before. 2. VIO prompts error msg: " This system cannot fulfill the allocation request. There are not enough free partitions or not enough physical volumes to keep strictness and satisfy allocation requirests. The command should be retried with different allocation characteristics. The command failed. " 3. Since we have 2 harddisk and 2 volumn group: rootvg, vg_2, and allocate all the space of each disk to the two volumn group. I use the lspv hdisk0 and lspv hdisk1 to check the usage status and found their spaces have both mostly used. I'm pretty sure that we still have space to allocate to new logic partition, but I have allocated all to existing partitions. So the problem is How can I reallocate the disk space so that the command could be prcessed? Your help would be high appreciated. Thank you so much in advance ![]() |

Hi Looks like your VG is full. Remember VIOS is an AIX-based OS so all theory about LVM is still active for it. What you need is a new disk to be added to the VG vg_2. Two if you're using LVM mirror. What the physical configuration of your current disks are ??, RAID adapter attached ?? Single SCSI adapter ??, SAN ?? One option you can use as last resort is to move the intended LV to the rootvg VG and used it until new disks are attached to the system. Hope this helps
