IVM and Tape Drives

Hi,

We have a 52A server with multiple LPARs managed via IVM. We do NOT have an HMC.

It shows up in the VIOS partition, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to share the tape drive with the LPARs. This particular tape drive is an IBM TS3200 connected via fibre channel. Though I was experiencing the same problem with a tape drive connected via a SCSI card.

AIX version 5.3
VIOS version 1.4.1.2-FP-9.2

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

John

Re: IVM and Tape Drives

As far as I'm aware the VIOS (and IVM) cannot share (virtualise) tape devices, scsi or fibre attached. This is a known limitation of the VIOS / IVM solution.
Currently only disk and CD/DVD ROM devices are supported.

Re: IVM and Tape Drives

This is correct, that the Tape Drive ca then you can allocate the fiber card that the Tape Drive is attached to to the relevant LPAR.

Re: IVM and Tape Drives

Thanks guys. That's what I was afraid of. So, I can't virtualize the tape drive, but I should be able to dedicate a fibre channel card to a given LPAR, even with the limitations of the VIOS / IVM solution?

Re: IVM and Tape Drives

No you can't as with IVM ALL hardware is vitualized. Thus to solve your problem you need an HMC.

Re: IVM and Tape Drives

Thanks a lot for your help. We'll look into getting an HMC.
