Read through the redbook:
IBM Redbooks | Advanced POWER Virtualization on IBM System p5: Introduction and Configuration

It also helps if you have a system that has APV (Advanced Power Virtualization) enabled. This will allow you to test and configure VIO servers and devices.

May seem a little obvious, but as no one has mentioned it.

Get yourself on the APV course.

IBM Training - United Kingdom - AU781AGB Advanced POWER Virtualization

combination of course, reading the redbook, and practising on a test environment.
