Hi, I'm new to this forum, and this is my first post. My primary HMC is a 7042-CR4, running 7.3.1.0. I purchased, used, an older HMC, a 7310-CR3, currently at 6.1, which I'd like to use as a secondary or "backup" HMC. Despite doing my training under 6.1, I've grown real accustomed to 7.3, and would like to have both HMCs at the same level. I tried a simple "apply corrective service" with the 7.3 CD in the drive, but it barfed at me. I suspect, from the big red warnings on the IBM website, that going from 6.x to 7.x isn't that simple. Can anyone clue me in as to: a) is it even possible to run 7.3 on a 7310-CR3? b) if so, how do I accomplish that? |

Rodak, You need to do a 'restoration' upgrade. Meaning that you need to backup all of your config files, then download the HMC recovery .iso and do the upgrade from that. I'm in the same boat right now. Never had to do any HMC updates and now I have an extra HMC that I want to get upgraded and migrate half my systems to. Fortunately I just want to wipe the HMC so I don't need to do any backups. Let me know how yours goes... Shawn |

I got the isos downloaded and burned, stuck disc 1 in the HMC drive, selected "Apply corrective service" but it failed, complaining about a missing file or something (I don't have it in front of me). I think there must be some different method of using the recovery DVDs - do you know what that is? |

To upgrade from 6 to 7, you need to save the profile information to DVD, you then install the HMC as if its a new HMC (not apply corrective service) and then use the DVD backup to restore your settings. Hope that makes sense as I'm noit in fron t of an HMC at the moment.

Eureka, it woiks! I had to do a "Save Upgrade Data" first, which does not save to a DVD, but rather to a protected place on the hard drive, apparently used just for that purpose. Then I booted from the 7.3.1 Upgrade DVD, and selected the "Upgrade" option (it warns you quite earnestly that you must first do the Save Upgrade Data before selecting this option). It found my saved data, prompted me for DVD#2, then rebooted and voila! 7.3.1! Many thanks! Now, on to other things..... |
