My HMC was at V5R1.0, so I decided to update it to a newer release. I figured that the most recent should be the best answer, but I've run into a few snags. I performed a Save Critical Data backup before starting, so at worst, I can revert to HMC V5R1.0. I downloaded the newest V6R1.0 and installed the image. No issues were noticed during the install. I restored my critical data via the menu prompt during install. At first it seemed ok, but once I click on various HMC functions, I get an error: HSCP0155 - The task is unavailable. Please try again later. In addition, when I SSH to the HMC, I am dropped into a standard bash shell, with the ability to do a simple su - (with root password) to get root access without contacting IBM. Is this some problem with the new release of do you think something simply happened during install? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Should I try to reinstall V6R1.0 or revert to V5R2.1? Thanks! Hi there, I would revert back to your previous release. IBM have announced the withdrawal of v6 release 1.0 Temporary withdrawal of HMC Version 6 Release 1.0 IBM has decided to temporarely withdraw HMC Version 6 Release 1.0 until fixes are available for, due to the following problems: - Internal modem generating Non Maskable Interrupts. All 7310C04/7315C05 with internal modem are subject to hang, after installing/upgrading to HMC Version 6 Release 1.0. - Partition activation failed due to Multicast MAC address error IBM - Subscription service - Bulletin I bet there are more howlers in the code than the above !!! you have also found one Incidently , IBM have also advised not to upgrade to AIX 5.3 ML5 if you are running oracle oh dear HTH Steve

Turns out HMC6.1 also has a problem looking at the correct memory location for virtual ethernet adapters, especially with VIO1.2.1.1. The VIO server cannot successfully boot with the virtual adapters specified as required in the HMC. I had to downgrade my HMC to 5.2.0 after I found out the hard way following a reboot of a P570. |

| astralvoid, I am not clear as to how this HMC upgrade was performed. 1)Did you use the recovery_media_6.1 to boot and did the upgrade install ?? or 2)Did you just install the recovery_media_6.1 and restore the critical data from version 5.1 on it? If your answer is yes for method 2, then this method is a wrong way of doing the upgrade. Also I am confused why you would restore critical_console_data from 5.1 on to version 6.1???.... if you take Critical_console_data_bkp at version5.1.....you should restore it onto the same version of HMC code..that is 5.1 ...not 6.1 as you did.. |

| Yes, method 2 was the method I used since there was no 'upgrade' path from HMC 5.1 to any higher version. I was trying to restore the info since after I booted with HMC V6.1, my LPAR information was no longer available and the HMC did not pick up the Managed System's (private) IP address (And I did not have it written down). Regardless, I was recently able to take my HMC to V5R2.1 by using IBM's work around by Restoring V5R2.1, then immediately applying MH00822 before using the rstugdata command to retrieve my upgrade settings. I will still hold out on the V6R1 until next year unless I need it's functionality. Thanks for the response and the explaination of how I ended up in the situation I was in. |
