Question really really frustrated

Hello,

I am new to this forum and also new to IBM Virtualization. I've been tasked with getting a few LPAR's running on 2 Managed Servers. The MS's are connected to the HMC and there seems to be an inital AIX LPAR installed by default on each one. Is this something I need to keep around or should I remove it? I want to create a VIO Server but can't start it because the other default LPAR's are dedicated...All the IBM documentation seems very general in what you can do.

These MS's are going to house LPAR of diffent AIX flavors to be used just for testing purposes and may be rebuilt often. So what I am looking for is what's the best solution to achieve this.

When I create a VIO Server via the HMC I don't get any option to add physical / logical drives? Is this normal?

Re: really really frustrated

You can wipe out the LPAR that comes on there. I think it is used by IBM when they are testing your server before shipping it out.

If by physical/logical drives, you are referring to the harddrives, you won't get options to add them. You only get the option to add the "Storage controller" that the harddrives are connected to. On a p570 or p560, I think the slot number is T14. Of course it may be different, but look for a physical device named "Storage controller".

Todd, to remove the default partition, right click on the managed system and set the service partition to unassigned, click ok and you should now be able to delete the default system partition

Re: really really frustrated

i would 100% recommend that you get your boss to send you on the LPAR & APV courses, especially if you are looking at getting into VIO.
