I have a new 7310 CR3 w/ 6.1.1 and one 9115-505 and AIX 5.3 and the APV feature.I installed VIO server via CD and a NIM master via smit eznim. I defined a client LPAR and now I want to get an AIX BOS installed on the LPAR. When I try to define a nim client using smit nim management functions but cannot get it to work. The IP subnet we are using is 10.0.0.2 - 10.0.0.254. I am not sure how to figure out which is the machine gateway and which is the master gateway IP. Any information i can get as to what the process is to achieve this will be greatly appreciated. Our HMC is no connected to the outside internet.

Firstly ... on the NIM Master, add an entry for the LPAR your trying to install. For example: 10.0.0.3 lpar1 Then define the machine via SMIT NIM, define a machine. Once that's been performed, Define your SPOT, LPP_SOURCE, MKSYSB's etc Resources, then assign the resources to the machine you just set up. Then on the LPAR you have set up, activate it in SMS mode, and select IPL, select a network card that is connected to the same network as the NIM Master, then set up the IP Parameters, Set the IP Address as 10.0.0.3, NIM Master address as what ever you set it up as, Gateway should be 10.0.0.1 and then subnet. Try a ping test and see if it can ping. If it can ... your in luck and your ready to install. Ben |

Where do you add the entry on the NIM Master in the etc/hosts file? Also I was trying to verify the IP's on my set up and dicovered something interesting. on the HMC under HMC configuration and customize network settings I see that that dhcp on and our subnet range is set for 10.0.0.2-254. and that "specify IP is checked" with a 10.0.0.1..When I go into the ASMI menu to view the network configuration I see that the network configs reflect the factory default DHCP of 198.168.128.2-254. Is this strange? So I would imagine I need to make some adjustments to the IP configuration.

Use this tutorial. It's an excellent insight and should provide you with everything you need to know to get started. http://www.pseriestech.org/forum/tut...tions-262.html (NIM server and client operations) Ben

First and foremost, setting up a NIM master on a VIO server is not a best practice. I'm not even sure it's supported! NIM is great if you have a lot of LPAR's you need to manage for updates, maint. and mksysb's. For a p505 with just one LPAR, it's easier to install the OS via CD. For larger installations, you can setup the NIM master on any client partition and it doesn't need to be on the same frame as long as you have network connectivity. In general to create the client add the IP entry in /etc/hosts on the NIM master and define the client LPAR in the NIM master. From your post it sounds like you haven't established the networking parameters for the IP subnet you listed. If the client is reachable by NIM on the same subnet it will assign it the same default g/w as the NIM master. As for the dhcp issue, HMC runs it's own internal dhcp server for connecting to each pSeries frame which is a total private network specific to the hmc and the pSeries unit. This connection is en0 to hmc0 on the pSeries CEC. The other ethernet connection on the hmc is the public network connection and is on en1 of the hmc to the network switch.
