I have a HMC with 1 system p 505 attached with 3 lpars. I just defined a new Linux lpar and I was wondering what the process would be to move or redirect the physical cdrom attached to the VIO lpar to the Linux lpar so I can load redhat. regards

Hi First you need to identify the cdrom device as well as the SCSI or IDE adapter this one is attached to. In VIOS there's the rmdev command you can use for this task, please see man rmdev at padmin session and you will see that rmdev has a -recursive flag you can use to remove the adapter and children (in this case the cdrom is one children). I used to issue the oem_setup_env to get into AIX and use the following commands to delete the cdrom: lsslot -c slot U7879.001.DQD0TU0-P1-T15 Logical I/O Slot pci12 ide0 this mean that the ide0 adapter on T15 (cdrom location in p570 server) is connected to the pci12 slot. padmin@bmvios01 /home/padmin >lsdev -Cc cdrom cd0 Available 0C-08-00 IDE DVD-ROM Drive cd1 Available 0C-08-01 IDE DVD-ROM Drive padmin@bmvios01 /home/padmin >lsdev -C | grep 0C-08 cd0 Available 0C-08-00 IDE DVD-ROM Drive cd1 Available 0C-08-01 IDE DVD-ROM Drive ide0 Available 0C-08 ATA/IDE Controller Device padmin@bmvios01 /home/padmin > then you can run rmdev: rmdev -Rdl pci12 this will unconfigure all childrens of pic12 which are cd0, cd1, ide0, and pci12 itself. Then using the HMC options you can move or delete the T15 slot and use it for your linux lpar. Hope this helps

Remove "Other mass storage controller" from any LPAR that currently using it. After Linux LPAR activation there will be cd-rom available in this LPAR. |

I did all the steps to present a cd rom to my linux lpar but my lpar did not see the cdrom until i rebooted my 505 server. Now I can see the cd rom but I need to present the lpar with a virtual hard drive so linux can be written to it. I did a mklv lv02 -t ext3 diskvg 10G that worked then a mkvdev -vdev -lv02 -vadapter vhost1 and that worked I did a lsmap -all an saw my lv02 mapped to vhost1 but my lpar does not see the virtual hard drive. I placed my Linux lv02 in the same volume group (diskvg) as my AIX master nim lv01. Is that ok? I am not using rootvg for my drive mapping assignments. All my drive mappings are in diskvg..

Ok I have a 7310CR# HMC 6.1.1 and a 9115505 AIX 5.3 w/APV and 4 lpars. 1-VIO 1-NIM Master 1-AIX 1-Linux. Now I just created the Linux lpar and I need to load RHEL ver5 on that lpar. I assigned a physical scsi conection and created my virtual connection but for me to get the cdrom seen by the Linux lpar I had to power down my managed server and power up again. Once I did that I had a cdrom seen by mt linux lpar. When I started to load Linux I found that I also needed to give my Linux partition a hard drive,(my bad). So I created lv and mapped it to my Linux Partition configured a scsi client in the Linux profile to the VIO SCSI host mapped it to my Linux lpar, but when i activated my Linux lpar I could not see my virtual scsi hard drive. I powered down the linux lpar and shut down the vio and activated only the Linux lpar and my virtual scsi connection was seen....I'm such a newbie..Now without the vio running when i try to load the OS I get kernel panics. I think I am having some filesystem issues..I wanted to rmlv and start the lv process over but I cannot when do a rmlv -f lv02 I get a error unable to perform task because either the lv is open and needs to be closed or a filesystem is open. I can do s lslv lv02 and see that the lv is active and i do not know how to close an lv...
