| Hi, I've installed HMC (6.2.1), open network, 128.200.91.15, one NIC to p650-6M2 AIX 5.2 (128.200.91.5). I can access HMC remotely, I can ping HMC from AIX and vice versa. I can add AIX from HMC if I use Console | Add host. But I CAN'T add the AIX if I use Server Management | Add Managed System. It will show fine, but the state is Not Connected. I need this option so I can remotely shut down and power on the server. hscroot@hmc:~> lssysconn -r all resource_type=sys,type_model_serial_num=unavailabl e,sp=unavailable,sp_phys_loc=unavailable,ipaddr=12 8.200.91.5,alt_ipaddr=unavailable,state=No Connection,connection_error_code=Connecting 0000-0000-00000000 Unfortunately, the server is in Colo 50 miles away so I can't check the serial cable. IBM support site suggests to reset the processor on managed system, by shutting down the server and unpluging the AC. I can't do that because it is a production system. I've tried restarting the HMC but without any luck. Any help appreciated. Thanks! |

Hi AFAIK the p650 server connects to the HMC using a serial cable to the serial port, not a network one. http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp0194.pdf (page 36) Hope this helps

You are right. I've learned this hard way. Now, I have another problem. It seems that HMC 6.1.2 dropped the support for serial ports. You can't manage the serial ports from HMC. And if you want to add a managed server the only choice is to use IP address. I wonder if HMC 6.1.2 supports serial ports. Most likely I will downgrade. Thanks |

No the hmc code at 6.1.2 only supports power5 systems and ip connection to the service processor. You need to install power4 HMC code, the latest is 3.3.7, and a serial connection to the p650. |

I tried to downgrade from v6 to v3. After I installed the first CD, it prompted to insert the second CD, but after the restart I got grub prompt instead of booting from the second CD. I made sure that boot from CD is the first option in BIOS, so I have no idea why I got this grub prompt. I put Windows 2003 server CD and booted in Recovery Console. I did fixboot and fixmbr, also doing format C: on HMC. Then I installed the first CD again and after the reboot it booted fine from the second CD. Everything looks OK now. Thanks everyone |
