Hi guys, Im quite new to vistualization and I'm setting up my own test server in the office. I have an HMC version 6.1.1 and an updated firmware of p520, when I connected my hmc to p520 it can't see it. I tried inter-changing the network port from the hmc to the server hmc ports but no good. Im searching for docs for almost 2 weeks to get this work, can someone help with my probs? |

Here's a link to the IBM HMC website to help get you started IBM - Technical information for HMC for POWER5 servers There used to be Redbook that was pretty good but the only one I could find is for version 7 which is a little different. I should mention you would typically enable DHCP on the HMC (if you don't have another DHCP server) so each server on the private HMC network can get an address. If you were to have many servers controlled by the HMC, you would configure a private network so the HMC can communicate to each server thru its HMC port. You would boot the HMC first and once it's boot, apply power to your servers. Your post didn't mention DHCP so maybe the HMC port on the 520 used its default address. You only have the one server so DHCP is probably not a big deal. Just so you know, if you connect a straight-thru network cable directly between the the HMC port on the server & the HMC, the HMC ports can configure themselves so you don't have to use a cross-over cable. They automatically detect the type of network cable you have. |

I used DHCP on my HMC and when I tried rebooting the hmc recognize this ip 192.168.255.254. But when I tried clicking/accessing it, its just hangs and got an error messages saying "cannot complete connection to hostname 192.168.255.254" and a lot of possible problems stated below on the pop-up window. Another question is, can someone confirm that my hmc is compatible with my server p520. hmc version = 6.1.1 p520 firmware = SF240_338 |

Hello, HMC connection issues can sometimes be a little tricky. If your server is a 9111-520, the IBM Power code matrix shows the HMC should be at 6.1.3 for your system firmware level. Please see the following page: IBM - POWER code matrix You can try updating the HMC to 6.1.3 and see what happens. As a last resort the service processor in the system can be reset but I've seen other connection issues after the reset was done. |
