Hmc

Hi All,

Our comp recently bought a AIX machine (9115-505).
We want to do LPAR on that machine. Following are the questions I have:

- Can I do LPAR on this model machine?
- If Yes, do we need to buy HMC again or will it be part of the Hardware&CD's we received.?
- Can I do LPAR without HMC or any other alternate to do LPAR?

Also Can I do LPAR on RS6000?

Please help me out on this.

Regards,
Ceenu

Re: Hmc

If you use the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) you can do LPARing on this machine, but you must have purchased the Virtualization Feature when you bought the system for this to work.

For RS6000, if its Power4 then yes - but yu'll need a P4 HMC

Re: Hmc

Hi

Well, the p505 only has one Internal SCSI adapter used to control the two SCSI drivers and the external SCSI adapter, so you can only create one partition unless your server has one or two HBA installed, in that case you can create as many LPARs as processor are available. If your server does not have the Micropartitioning feature enabled then you can install up to four LPAR as weel as you have a p505Q server, if not, only two, and even one.

If you have the Virtualization Feature you can use the IVM, that is no more than a Websphere Application, in order to do the partitioning but with some limitations. This is a very good opcion if yoru organization have no more p5 servers.

Hope this helps

Re: Hmc

Check out the "quick start guide" for your machine

I googled for "505 quick start guide" if the link I've pasted in here disappears:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...sa41516503.pdf

Buried in the back are instructions on how to connect to your machine via the HMC1 port and access the Integrated Virtualization Manager.
I've used this procedure to get into one of our p55A servers after it gave up searching for our HMC on the network
I didn't go hunting for lpar configuration stuff in here, but based on previous posts it looks like there should be something for you once you get here.

Interesting comment from Ross regarding licensing. I remember opting for something along these lines when configuring the system now I think about it...

I'll assume you have enough physical adapters to run multiple partitions...

A rule of thumb is that each Lpar needs it's own adapter slot or ownership of an internal adapter. You can't share ports on one adapter between lpars for example. There are exceptions to this rule (vio) with some extra work and resources.

Re: Hmc

If you do opt to use the IVM then ALL the hardware is allocated to the IVM partition and all further LPARS are strictly virtual - at least according to the instructions.

IVM is also limited as to the number of VLANs you can define.

For a 505 I suspect that won't be a problem, but you never know.

If you are unsure then use the System Planning Tool to investigate your options.

The virtualisation featur code is 7940, and you need one for every active CPU in your system. Without this you cannot use Virtual I/O or micro-partitioning.
