| We have just installed a p5 HMC and have attached our p560Q servers to it through the dedicated ethernet lan. They show up and work fine except for when we try to go to tasks and open a terminal window. A terminal winow will open and say open in progress and open completed but that is it and we are unable to connect to the server. Any ideas what we may have not started up or why this is occuring? THANKS! |

Where is the console going on the p560? - to the now defined terminal adapter? How did you connect to the console before the HMC was installed? What have you done to change the console to the new vsa/vty device? |

| We have the p560 plugged into the HMC 1 port and it goes to a defined vlan on our ethernet switch, which the HMC is part of. This is a brand new server and we are trying to access it through the HMC since we brought it up and not use either a laptop or dumb terminal. We have not did anything to change the new console to a vsa/vty device, not for sure even where to. First time using the p5 series HMC and still trying to understand the V7 as we can't find much info on it. THANKS! |

If using for the first time you can use a straight connect ethernet cable between the HMC and server to verify that you have the HMC network set up correctly.

Could be a million things. As it is all new gear call IBM. Go to IBM United States, hover the mouse over "Get Support" then when the pane updates select "Open a service request". Follow the instructions. Because you can see the system from the HMC and the terminal seems to open - but there is no login - I suspect there is a terminal / console definition problem on the AIX installation. If it was preinstalled then it was probably a standard load that has the wrong console device configured. You could try activating the partition and select booting to SMS, then (if the console works at this point) take option 4 to configure the console. Otherwise you may need to detatch the HMC and power off then on the system (to let it know it is no longer managed by an HMC so that the service processor will reactivate the serial ports) and use a serial console to access AIX / the LPAR to reconfigure the console device in AIX. |

Hi Did you connect those servers to a serial console using the serial S0 connector in the back of the server ??? If so, then you need to go to ASM menu by connecting to the HMC1/HMC2 Ethernet ports and reset your server to the Factory Defaults. With this you will lose all passwords already configured as well as any partitions already configured. Hope this helps

OK so you installed AIX on the full server and then later added the HMC - is that right? In this case the server is not an LPAR, thus the console of the LPAR is not being picked up. Try defining a new LPAR that includes all the hardware of the server and start that up.

| Thanks for all the replys on this, we had connected both servers to a dumb terminal through the serial port and this was our problem as the console was still trying to use this. We did open an issue with IBM and with the first server, which we hadn't started to customize we just had to take it down and reset the factory settings and was able to get it to work. The second server had been customized as we received it weeks before the HMC and on it we had to take it down, bring it up in maint. mode and delete the vty's and tty's and a few other things. We also reset the factory settings (not sure if needed), then we were able to get it to work. When we first reset the factory settings and brought it up the terminal window would work all the way up to the "Welcome to AIX" and then hang there without starting anything up, which also wouldn't let us access the server. This is a known problem with V7 that IBM is aware of and if anyone else hits this I would suggest opening a call to get either the document on the fix or better yet wait until you can hook directly into the HMC before bringing the server up and avoid the problem all together. Thanks once again for the help. - Greg |
