| Hi I currently have a setup that requires a backup HMC, it will be in another country. The network guys are creating a Virtual Private LAN for the two machines so that they run as DHCP servers. As I understand it, bootp runs at layer2, which is used to startup the machines etc. Can anyone forsee anyissues with this configuration? Thanks in advance for any help Chris |

The big reason not to do it is of you are in your computer hall in country one and the HMC fails for any reason. Engineers require an HMC located physically close to the server in question. You'll also need to watch how your call home is configured as this setup may end up calling Country B's Tech Support when you should have called country A. But technically I can't think of any problems - although any kind of firewall on those private VLANS may cause issues.

Hi You can use DHCP in order to give an IP Address to each pSeries managed by a single HMC. But you can also use static IP Addressing configured at ASM level on each pSeries's HMC ethernet interface so use of DHCP is not necesary. With the right networking configuration both of your HMC can access pSeries managed nodes. Some firewall configuration work should be needed to allow traffic to some ports. Hope this helps
