| Dear all, I have a question and need help from someone has experience in activation for CPU. My customer is working with p570 and he uses 2 CPU and 2 inactivated CPU. Now he buys Activation Code for the rest CPU and wants to work with all CPU As I saw in the Redbook, when activating CPU you need HMC for adding Activation Code. My question is "Can I activate CPU without using HMC?" if it is possible so what and how must I do? Thank you very much Herzt |

| I've just recently been there and done that, and you do NOT need an HMC, contrary to popular belief. It can be done quite readily via the "ASMI" interface which is itself accessed via the HMC port(s) with any silly laptop or probably any device with an ethernet port and a standard web browser. I believe it is even reachable via the serial ports but I think the web interface will be easiest for most people these days. You just need the ability to set up the laptop with the right IP address that the ASMI expects by default (assuming that stuff hasn't been tinkered with, which would make the problem quite a bit harder), browse to the magic URL, and away you go. Below is the link to the ASMI doc which gives the blow by blow. If you get stuck, feel free to contact me... it took me a while to find the docs, but once there, it was fairly easy. Now, why they shipped our server with only 1 of its 4 processors activated is another question, but out of scope here. Good luck... Harold Accessing the ASMI using a Web browser |
