Hi everyone I undestand a thread has already been created, I would like to create a new one with specific questions I have What strategy and methods are you using to backup your VIO server and client environments ? I see many methods. I would like to implement an automated backup of the VIO server, non rootvg structure and virtual device mappings to whole disks. Along with that client OS and data I am considering this approach but need some additional help vio server - backupios How can I automate the backup IOS command from the HMC or NIM server ? When I try to vioservcmd from the HMC it seems to run the command in the root environment on the vio server not the padmin environment. I was thinking of either using NFS filesystem or DVD vio server - client root volume groups I take it I run the savevgstruct command first, then the backupios. That way the vg structure will be restored if I ever need to restore the VIO server vio server - virtual device mappings Are these backed up via backupios ? HMC vio server and client vscsi adapters Are these backed up in the HMC profile ? VIO client OS I am thinking to back these up via NIM mksysb. That way If I lose the internal disk I just restore the OS on newly mapped logical volumes ? VIO client data Backup via TSM as if it was a normal LPAR. The devices are mapped as whole disks. If I lost the data within the SAN, I would recreate the LUNS on the SAN, represent to the VIO server and map to the client, then restore Any advice comments appreciated TIA Steve

I'm AIX admin for long years in South of France ( Toulouse and Montauban ) Now I test VIO Server + NIM First and simple backup/restore VIO AIX Client. More complex : backup/restore the VIO Server (no use of installios ) - Create the VIO as client of the master NIM - Backup the VIO Server like other client - Restore it : you must activate the VIO partition in SMS mode, giving an @IP to the physical interface for booting in bootp on the NIM master - Initialize on the master NIM the installation of the VIO Server - Waiting the VIO Server to install ... - After boot of the VIO Server, you must recreate the virtual devices vhost[0-nn] - After that, no problem for booting all clients Pierre-Michel |
