Hi I am trying to restore mksysb backup through NIM. the backup is taken from 9111-520 and it should be restore to 7028-rc4. NIM installation goes fine until mksysb image going to be loaded on NFS and that is the time we get "Uknown Net Dev" on control panel, and I am guessing it is due to device driver even though we are restoring the backup from newer pseries to older one. is there any way to include additional device drivers in NIM ? or any ogher suggestion ? thanks for help |

When restoring to a different machine other than the one you took the mksysb, the only supported method is to use an LPPSRC and SPOT, While on a call with support regarding other issue I was having, I got a "Well, it might work most of the time, but if you have problems don't blame us.", when I asked about a similar situation. If you are using a spot created from the mksysb, it might be the case where the device drivers are not present, use a SPOT created out of installation media and it should work fine. best regards, esv. |

The trouble is that people are misusing mksysb. An mksysb is intended to be restored to identical hardware as where the original was made. There are things you can do to try and help the problem and they are: 1. Install ALL device drivers on the original LPAR, and hopefully that will work when you make and restore the mksysb. 2. When doing the NIM restore include an lpp_source to allow any missing device drivers to be added. To ensure that you have the correct device drivers do an lpp_source based install to the target kit first. If that works you know the device driver is available. The last alternative is to create a fresh lpp_source installed LPAR and then configure it as needed for the application.

We included LPP_Source when we did smitty nim_bosinst, but device drivers are in mksysb resource that has been created based on our backup, so system hung as soon as boot complete from tftpboot image with following error: 0605 Uknowd Net Dev Also, we created mksysb resource based on our backup, then used SPOT that was created from the orginal LPP_Source, but we got error that SPOT and mksysb are in different maintenance level. so the only way is to include all device drivers at the installation time. or maybe install all device drivers in original system and then do mksys backup. now the problem is I don't know which bundle I should install from cdrom to have all device drivers on original sysem. Could you please let me know how to install all remaining device drivers on original system ? |

Hi The SPOT Maintenance level that was created from CDs was less than mksys backup Maintenance level and that was the reason our installation was hanging right at start up. upgraded the SPOT to proper Maintenance level and installation worked fine. Thanks for help |
