I am worried about loss of a server and the configuration info on it. We have a good system of backing up the "data", thru the product Networker, and I am very comfortable using the product, but my concern is should we loose the whole server, would the makesysb be able to automatically recreate the non rootvg filesystems, partitions, and volumegroups on the server? (this assumes you have enough disks), will you be able to use the makesysb to tell how much disk and diskspace you need? Also in my last place of work we used sysback, what are the advantages of sysback over makesysb? |

answer : mksysb = only rootvg. You need to do savevg for the other VG you have. So when you'll restore your mksysb it will restore the others filesystems ( because /dev/filesystem definition ) if the other hdisks not in the rootvg ( SAN, physical, virtual, etc ) are accessible by the LPAR. |

I too use Networker and have restored many things with it but for it to work it has to be installed on the server you are trying to restore. I am pretty sure that Networker is in the rootvg so booting from mksysb should give you what you need to restore the filesystems through Networker but I am not sure about the volume groups and partitions. |
