Nim questions

Hi,
We are looking to move some systems from one location to another. There are a lot of servers with versions from 4.3.3 to 5.3. I feel the best option would be to have a NIM server to store all mksysbs, also with a tape backup as backup.

Am I correct in believing as long as the NIM server is at the highest level, it will be able to store mksysbs from any AIX version back to 4.3.3 as we need?

Does anyone see any possible issues with using this approach?

Cheers for any info.

Re: Nim questions

we use this at the moment and it works very well

me have created a large area to Nfs mount
Created a script to mount NFS , mksysb the system to file , copy the 2 files in / directory and then umount the file system

all mksysbs then live on the nim server
You must have network in place that allows nim to see all the systems

Re: Nim questions

Hi,

Yes,

There are utilities within NIM that will take mksysb images of the clients and also act as a transport for restore.

I haven't tested restoring a 4.3.3 server from a SPOT resource running 5.3. I have a hunch this won't work and would therefore advising setting up an additional spot and lpp resource to support 4.3.3 clients

Have a look at the document link

scorour,

Just make sure you test you various scenarios. That is what will save you and give you confidence in your procedure.
