Good afternoon everyone, What are the minimum hardware requirements to run AIX version 5.3? Would that be a 7044-170? Regards, Inferno

This may or may not help you. I'm somewhat ignorant of street names. I'm pretty sure that 5.3 will run on any PCI based RS/6000 or pseries machine. The microchannel and ISA was pulled out in 5.3. I think the 7044-170 is the same machine I have: a 44P. There are lessor machines that will run 5.3. I might be mistaken but I think a 43P does just fine. I doubt if IBM "supports" it. And, it would be wise to check with someone that has the specific machine you are going to try if you are going to purchase one.

IBM support is not really needed. The reason why I am asking is because I want to get some practice in order to get the IBM certification. So I need a machine on which I can practice all that is required in order to pass the exams. IBM Certified Specialist - pSeries Administration and Support for AIX 5L V5.2IBM Certified Systems Expert - p5 and pSeries Enterprise Technical Support AIX 5L V5.3I really appreciate the input; so far getting this information has been like pulling teeth. A while ago I contacted IBM and they told me via email to contact another department via their website. When I asked for the number of that department they specifically instructed me to contact them only via their website. After more than a week and about a dozen emails someone called and I explained the situation to him, that I would like to obtain some used hardware, etc. Supposedly he would get in contact with me but I have not heard anything yet, and this was about a week ago. I do not get it, I explained that I was interested in getting IBM certified. Companies like Sun Microsystems and Red Hat will constantly harrass you and damn near send a limo and a bunch of exotic dancers to your home in order to get you certified. So what is wrong with IBM?

Check this thread for what's wrong with IBM: Google Groups: comp.unix.aix (Well, another example, anyway.) I apologize if this is somewhat vague, but is your hardware black of beige? If beige, I believe the only model supported (that means, in this case, "will run on") is the F50. Based on the following, it looks like it should be: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg245120.pdf |

Of course anothe rapproach might be to get the vendor to guarantee that the hardware wil run AIX 5.3 but that implies commercial vendors/direct sales and they can be expensive. You approach is exactly the one I took to certification incidentially, it works.

AIX 5L Version 5.3 runs on all currently supported CHRP (Common Hardware Reference Platform)-based POWER hardware. Run the prtconf command. If it's a CHRP machine, the string chrp appears on the Model Architecture line. The following devices and machines are not supported:
The following functions and filesets are not supported:

| I don't know if this helps, but I am happily running 5.3 TL5 on my 44P-170 at home. It works fine although there are some "interesting" features to the install. Note that not having the graphics installed switches off the options for EAL4+/CAPP security on the install.... and that installing 5.3 seems have greater requirements from the multisync monitor than for 5.2 on a 44P-170. Cheers Colin |
