Migrating data luns to new SAN array

Hello, We are going to migrate a Data luns from an existing SAN array
to a new SAN array. The Server has physical HBA's connected to SAN directly. The Vendor is going to use array tools to migrate the luns and data. he will give us the new luns with the metadata intact.

but am not sure of the procedure once I've migrated the data.

1. unmount the filesystems on server
2. Varyoff the VGs on server
3. exportvg on server
3. ask SAN team to start the lun migration.
4. once the new luns are presented the host, run cfgmgr to check the lun visibility.
5. importvg ----??

How do we import the VG's ?? we might have different hdisks.
please let me know the steps to import vg's.

Thanks in advance !
Govinda.

Re: Migrating data luns to new SAN array

So lets assume you ran the cfgmgr and se a bunch of new disks:
Befor starting we need a
chdev -l hdiskxy -a pv=yes
run on each new disk you see.
Now there are 2 possible szenarios
1)all disks were in the same vg and you don't need to care which disk to take for the import then just do a
importvg -vg <vgname> hdiskxy
2)all "fresh" disks you see where seperated in several vgs and now you need to know which disk belongs to which vg. You can do this whith a
lqueryvg -Atp hdiskxy
there you see some cryptic stuff and a bunch of lvnames, yes these are the vlvnames of the vg this disk originally belonged to. So its eay to find the right disk for you importvg command now.

And please be sure that you have a backup of the date within this "to-be-migrated-vgs". If Storage teams migrate hdisks there can something go wrong very quick!

Cheers seth

Re: Migrating data luns to new SAN array

Its done for strange behaviour/phenomenons prevention. Most original Doku does not mention this but its essential that AIX knows the PVIDs to all its disks before you can use them 100%
