Is it possible to write a mksysb image that I've saved to an nfs share to a bootable tape from the machine with the NFS share? Basically I'm looking to have a disaster preparedness strategy, so in the event of a system crash, I could write the weekly mksysb from the NFS share to tape and recover the OS from that. |

quite a few off board.. the resolution was to go with a NIM environment. I couldn't use it at first because I had it attached to 2 networks, which led to it getting confused with the gateways. Once I removed that factor it worked nearly perfectly. The general consensus otherwise was that it's possible to write bootable tapes from other systems, but it's not worth the effort. |

This is a formula I had from some time ago. It may still work. on the server that the image is from: # cd / # mkszfile # vi the bosinst.data file and make sure PROMPT = yes # echo 512 NONE >/tapeblksz # mkinsttape /tmp/2nd.image This will place all the system files required on the 2nd image of the mksysb tape to a file. Next we transfer the /tmp/2nd.image file to the NFS server and placed it into /tmp, then on the NFs server run the following: # chdev -l rmt0 -a block_size=512 # echo "Dummy Install Image" |dd of=/dev/rmt0 bs=512 conv=sync # tctl rewind # tctl -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 1 # dd if=/tmp/2nd.image of=/dev/rmt0 bs=512 # tctl rewind # tctl -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 2 # echo "Dummy Install Image" |dd of=/dev/rmt0 bs=512 conv=sync # tctl rewind # tctl -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 3 # dd if=/backup/mksysb.image of=/dev/rmt0 bs=512 boot off CD and restore from tape if restoring to a server with different hardware. |
