hi, how can i restrict a user to the selected commands . lets i just want to allow user JOE that he can run only ls, passwd,df,topas commands. need ur suggestion with ful method urgently plz. I also want to allow user Joe tht he can go to /usr or /var but he cant go any other file system or directory. i have already try rsh but tht restrict the user to his /home directory. any idea |

As always to these kinds of questions, why are you trying to restrict him to these commands? What you are doing is pretty much contrary to what Unix security is all about. The only way to do what you are suggesting would be to create a separate Set of directories - frequently called a jail and have the user restricted to that using chroot. This is more commonly done for protocols such as ntp. This link may offer you some ideas: Set up rssh with chroot jail on AIX 5.3 | Snoozing Dragon But before you do, what are you trying to accomplish in all of this? I suppose you could alias the commands you want the user to run and unset the PATH.

thanks ross for ur help. actulay i m doing this b/c my user have access to command prompt but i dont want tht my user can delete move any file even by mistake or things like tht. secondly i m just searching for my self tht how can he restrict user to use the particular files or file system only . thts all i want and still unable to get solution Ill be thankful to u ross if u can help me as i m new to AIX |
