How to migrate AIX 5.3 from p55A to Power 550

Hi,

I want to migrate AIX from p55A to Power 550. It's a SCSI vs SAS disks.

Can somebody tell me how to do this? Do the mksysb command will complete the work? I have experience with system backup and restore with mksysb but only on same disks?

I think that here the real problem will be drivers for disk controllers.

Do anyone have experience with this?

Thanks Mikky,

As long as you have AIX install media that supports the new hardware you should be OK.
Boot the media and select migration, checkout mksysb migration docs for more info.

Re: How to migrate AIX 5.3 from p55A to Power 550

Several tasks to do with nim server.

1. make mksysb from old machine to nim server filesystem.
2. In nim server, create the lppsource and spot for AIX level to which you
want to update, althought the mksysb is not at this up level.
3. In nim server create the resource mksysb with the image of the old
machine.
4. Create the new machine in the nim server.
5. Create resource bosinst_data with apropiate settings in the nim server.
6. Allocate the nim resources to the new machine: lppsource, mksysb,
spot, bosinst_data in the nim server.
7. Perform bos_inst operation for the new machine in the nim server with
Source for BOS = mksysb.
8. Boot the new machine in SMS mode, and set the Remote IPL with IPs
for the new client machine, nim server and gateway. Test ping to
nim server. Set the first boot device as this network adapter.
9. Exit from SMS menu, boot from network and restore the mksysb. At
end, the nim server updates AIX from lppsource (overwrite) or initiates
the migration. Finally reboots the new machine at the new AIX level.

The nim resource bosinst_data settings:
all_devices_kernels = yes,
recover_devices = no,
mksysb_migration_device=network (for migration),
install_method=migrate or overwrite,
install_devices_and_updates=yes
prompt = no

These are general tasks, look at installation and migration book for more details in section mksysb migration.

regards.
Silvia.

Re: How to migrate AIX 5.3 from p55A to Power 550

Hello Silvia,

Many thanks for this explanation. I have experience with NIM, I will test this procedure in the upcoming days. Now I test the procedure with mkdvd command, previously with updated TL and installed sas drivers.

Thanks again for your reply, I appreciate it.
