Group file issue

Hello,

I am having difficulty creating a group, there are certain errors which I cant fix.

This is the story, the company I work for has not controlled the way groups are added to the system. We are at the stage where the group file cannot be edited with vi because there are too many user names in a group.

If too many users are added into a group the following error occures:

failed setting terminal ownership and mode
3004-503 Cannot set process credentials

# run lsuser as root on the id that cannot login

# lsuser username

rt027mzk id=22489 home=/home shell=/usr/bin/ksh gecos=Mohammed Kavla, 27, , login=true su=true rlogin=true daemon=true admin=false sugroups=ALL admgroups= tpath=nosak ttys=ALL expires=0 auth1=SYSTEM auth2=NONE umask=22 registry=files SYSTEM=compat logintimes= loginretries=0 pwdwarntime=0 account_locked=false minage=0 maxage=4 maxexpired=4 minalpha=0 minother=0 mindiff=0 maxrepeats=8 minlen=5 histexpire=52 histsize=20 pwdchecks= dictionlist= fsize=-1 cpu=-1 data=262144 stack=65536 core=2097151 rss=65536 nofiles=2000 roles=

This is incorrect you should see the following on the first line:

<userid> id=22489 pgrp=groupname groups=goupname home=/home shell=/usr/bin/ksh

this is fixed by manually editing the group file which is not a good thing.

This process has been happening for sometime and now I believe the group file has become corrupt.

I cannot create a new group, the error:

3004-698 Error committing changes to "retail05" : Value is invalid.

i run the group check command

#grpck -n ALL

3001-226 Bad group id "-2" in "nobody".
3001-229 Group id "226" for group "retail02" is not unique.
3001-229 Group id "226" for group "retail03" is not unique.
3001-238 Missing stanza for "/ò)" in /etc/group.

these errors cannot be fixed using the -y option.

can someone give me more idea's how to fix this file?

Much appreciated !

Chris.

remember I cannot use vi to edit the file.

Re: Group file issue

I have this sorted, I got called out at 04:30 this morning for a different issue so when that was fixed I decided it was too late to go to bed and got on this.

a solution:

recreate group file on a test server using a mksysb so that you get all system settings.

ensure grp id's match those of the group match those in the password file.

I then wrote a script to create the user groups required for the company using the passord file for user names and groups on the system.

This has now fixed all issues and errors.

Hurrah!
