| Not that I know of. If this is an HMC-managed system, you have to use the HMC to update/upgrade system firmware; if it is standalone and you have a working OS on it, you should use the respective command line method; if it is standalone and has no OS installed, all you have left with is the diag CD and firmware CD combo method. Here's a comprehensive description from IBM (AIX 5L wiki) |

Hi Using serial port only ?? in older machines you could connect an IBM3151 and once the system is off could connect to the Service Processor application in order to upgrade the microcode using diskettes. Nowdays with the pSeries servers this is replaced by using the HMC to apply the microcode files.

how about cp firmware-lable.bin > /dev/ttyx on the sending machine and cp < /dev/ttyx on the recieving machine. I know that this works when you cat a file. I use 'cat /etc/hosts > /dev/tty2' on the sender and 'cat < /dev/tty2' on the recieving machine to test the heart beat links for HACMP on systems. I don't see why it shouldn't work for a copy command. |

A p570 server requires an HMC - why would you want to upgrade the firmware outside of that nice, safe environment. Jim - your method won't work as new firmwares muust be introduced directly into the Service Processor and not into an LPAR. In worst case here - copy the firmware file to a server where the HMC can reach via ftp, and then let the HMC do its thing.
