Lightbulb Defining a NIM machine

Hi

We only have only few lpars (on 2 p570 frames) which were built using manual CD install. However, after reading about NIM here, I want to configure NIM installation.

I have printed a copy of Steve`s (aka Steevojb) excellent guide
but without any previous experience of NIM, I still have many knowledge gaps and would like your help.

Having set up the master, how do I define a client that has not even been built and thus does not have an ip address or resolvable hostname? Basically, the lpar is not activated yet and I am looking to activate it and do the initial install from the NIM server.

Best regards

Jisco

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Smitty nim
Perform NIM Administration Tasks
Manage Machines
Define a Machine
Enter the hostname (which should be resolvable to an IP address, but doesn't need to be on the network)
Fill in the remaining dialog.

You may need to define some network objects in advance.

You can do that without the device being on the network, that's perfectly normal.

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Hi Tony

Thanks very much. I have just done that and will work through the rest of the procedure next week.

Best regards

Thumbs up Re: Defining a NIM machine

Thanks Scott

Perhaps you can send it to me privately. That `ll be great. I haven`t succeeded in booting from the NIm server yet but I am still working on it.

Regards

Jisco

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Hi Steve,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I ended up using wsm to define the NIM resources (bosinst_data, spot, lpp_source, and inst_script) on the server and these all show status as “ready to use”. I have configured the client and the “ping test” succeeds. However, when I try to boot the client from the NIM server I get “BOOTP ERROR: BOOTP request failed, QUIT
‘BA010004’”

Regards

Jisco

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Hi

Couple of things to check

1. Is you client on the same subnet as the NIM server ?
2. Have a look at /etc/tftpaccess.ctl to ensure you have the following lines

allow:/tftpboot

3. Also check tftpd is running

[pr-tsm] root # lssrc -s tftpd
Subsystem Group PID Status
tftpd tcpip 19356 active

4. Have a look at /etc/bootptab to ensure there are no incorrect or 'old' entries from previous attempts

Let me know your findings

HTH

Steve

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Another thing, just in case

Can the NIM server resolve the hostname of your client ?

Steve

Re: Defining a NIM machine

Hi Steve

1) Yes, the NIM client and server are in the same subnet. (server is 10.161.11.91 and I have configured the client with 10.161.11.109)
2) /etc/tftpaccess.ctl has allow:/tftpboot in it
3) Tftpd is running
root@nimserver:/etc$ lssrc -s tftpd
Subsystem Group PID Status
tftpd tcpip 221398 active
4) The following is the entry in /etc/bootptab
nimclient:bf=/tftpboot/nimclient:ip=10.161.11.109:ht=ethernet:sa=10.161.1 1.91:sm=255.255.255.0: (where 10.161.11.91 is the nim server address)
5) NIM server can resolve the hostname of the client. However ping (from the server end) does not complete because the client is not running (at least not to the point of receiving icmp requests)

Cheers
