AIX(VIO/LPAR) with Free NAS ISCSI solution

Hi,

I was looking on Google for AIX-VIO/LPAR with ISCSI solution and found following really nice tutorial about how to setup ISCSI with free NAS.

1) Build Your Own Open Source NAS Device Using FreeNAS | Train Signal Training - Free Computer Training Videos

2) Build Your Own Open Source NAS Device Using FreeNAS – Part 2 | Train Signal Training - Free Computer Training Videos

After going through with this really impressive doc, I've decided to implement Free NAS with ISCSI but have some query.

- can AIX support Free NAS?
- Which are the Hardware (storage) available that supports AIX and Free NAS?
- is there anything required to setup on P520. (e.g. file sets, or add ISCSI adapter)

I'm really looking for ISCSI solution for AIX and if this is supported then its awesome solution to replace fiber base.

if anyone has implemented this or similar solutions , please guide.... I will highly appreciate.

Thanks!

Hi,

Don't know about Free NAS. But IBM DS3300 is iSCSI base storage and should support pSereis & AIX.

Re: AIX(VIO/LPAR) with Free NAS ISCSI solution

The trouble with any NAS based solution is the speed that it runs at.

Why buy loads and loads of expensive POWER6 hardware and then run all the storage over cheap copper solutions where you'll have on wire contention between real network traffic and storage traffic.

Maybe 10 Gb NAS is an option - but there is a reason why Fibre connected storage is the right way to go for POWER based solutions that require to hit performance targets.

I've seen a myriad of NAS based solutions where the NAS device simply wasn't up to the throughput required (mainly Intel/VMware solutions). I'd certainly not advise that on POWER.

Thanks Ross for advise.

I am not worry about performance as this for Education purpose only and personal use.

i am struggling to find right (and cheap) ISCSI base storage which can support VIO and LPAR on P520.

Could you please advise the require things to setup the environment.

Again, I appreciate your help!

Thanks!
