I finally discovered a workaround for my problem. It seems that the NIM software cannot handle sources from NFS mounted filesystems. After copying the source lppsource and mksysb to a non-NFS mounted volume, I was able to make everything work as expected.

I find it odd that NIM can't handle NFS mounted filesystems.
