This may or may not help you. I'm somewhat ignorant of street names.
I'm pretty sure that 5.3 will run on any PCI based RS/6000 or pseries machine. The microchannel and ISA was pulled out in 5.3. I think the 7044-170 is the same machine I have: a 44P. There are lessor machines that will run 5.3. I might be mistaken but I think a 43P does just fine. I doubt if IBM "supports" it. And, it would be wise to check with someone that has the specific machine you are going to try if you are going to purchase one.
